What is Omaha anyway?

Omaha is both a city and a people. I will tell you about the city first.

The City of Omaha Nebraska

Omaha is a city, port of entry in Eastern Nebraska and the seat of Douglas County. It is roughly located in the middle on the eastern border of Nebraska with a large riverside section. To its east are the Misouri River and Countil Bluffs Iowa. To its southwest (about 50 miles) is Lincoln Nebraska the Capital of Nebraska. Lewis and Clark visited this land in 1804 and in 1846-47 a group of Mormon Pioneers on their way to Utah spent a winter in Omaha (actually land Omaha annexed later (They called it winter quarters and later it was called florence)) . 600 Mormons perished that winter.

Omaha was incorporated in February 2nd of 1857. It was named after a group of Native American people. Currently the reservation for this group of Native Americans is around 70 miles north and the tribal council for that group reside in Macy Nebraska.

During the ten years that followed Omaha became a high trade area for the nation (thanks in many ways to the Union Pacific Railroad). During this time Omaha was the capital of the Nebraska Territory. The capital was moved to Lincoln when the state was founded (1867).

Omaha's growth fell a bit around the turn of the Century but soon afterwards grew very quickly and annexed many small towns in its area. Offutt Air Force Base was established in Omaha and remains there today.

Many major Industries involved with Omaha are still involved in some way with agriculture but Omaha is also home to major Insurance Companies, Telephone services, and oil refining just to name a few. In 1994 Omaha's Population was 342,018 residents in the city alone. With the surrounding areas included it was nearly double that figure. The Average household has 2.4 people. The Average age in 1994 was 35. The Average household income was 31,460.

The Omaha Indians

You know...Ive worked with the Omaha Indians and the small amount I know about their history really doesnt do them justice. I would really suggest you either visit them or find a good book on the subject (and I know they exist). There is an educational film put out by NETV (located in lincoln) which goes over a small part of it in the form of a drama.

The Omaha Indians migrated from the atlantic coast through many states to Missouri. Many of the sects split at this point. Til about the 17th century the Omaha mainly existed in Minnesota. Driven from there by the migrating dakota people they settled in Nebraska. In 1854 they sold most of their land to the US government. In 1882 a reservation was established in Nebraska and that is where they remain as a tribe today.

Omaha was named from this tribe, who had a licensed trading post on site in 1825.
